Why I Love What I Do: A Note from Derek

I’ve never been the kind of guy who wants to sit behind a desk all day. I like being outside, working with my hands and seeing the results of a hard day’s work.
That’s a big part of why I love tree work.
Every day is different. One day, we might be pruning a tree that has grown too close to a house. The next, we could be removing a damaged tree that’s become a safety concern. Some jobs are pretty straightforward, while others take a lot of planning, experience and teamwork to complete safely.
You never really know what the day is going to bring and I like that.
Every Tree and Property Is Different
When you work with trees, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every tree is different, and so is every property.
You have to look at the tree’s health, size, location and surroundings. Is it close to a home, driveway or power line? Are there dead branches hanging over an area where people walk or park? Can the tree be pruned and maintained, or has it become too damaged or unstable to keep?
Sometimes the best solution is to remove a tree. Other times, a little pruning or maintenance can help it stay healthy and safe for years to come.
I enjoy figuring out what needs to be done and finding the safest, most practical way to do it.
There’s Satisfaction in a Job Done Right
Tree work can be challenging, but that’s also what makes it rewarding.
There’s a lot of satisfaction in finishing a job and seeing the difference right away. Maybe a homeowner no longer has to worry about a dead branch hanging over the roof. Maybe their yard has more sunlight and usable space. Or maybe a tree that was overgrown and unbalanced now looks healthier and fits the property better.
At the end of the day, I know the work we’ve done has helped someone feel safer and more confident about their property. That means a lot to me.
Helping Homeowners Make the Right Call
A lot of homeowners aren’t sure when a tree needs attention. They know something doesn’t look right, but they may not know whether it’s a serious problem.
That’s completely understandable. Most people don’t spend their days checking trees for cracks, decay, dead branches or structural issues.
I like being able to take a look, explain what I’m seeing and give homeowners an honest recommendation. Not every tree needs to come down, and not every issue is an emergency. My job is to help people understand their options so they can make the right decision for their property.
Working Outdoors Never Gets Old
There are definitely some long, hot days—and a few cold ones too—but I’d still choose working outdoors over sitting inside.
We get to work throughout Ottawa and the surrounding communities, including Stittsville, Nepean, Richmond, Kanata, Carleton Place, Perth, Almonte and Smiths Falls. There are some beautiful properties and landscapes across this region, and it’s great to play a part in keeping them healthy and safe.
Tree work also gives you a real appreciation for how important trees are. They provide shade, privacy and habitat for wildlife. They can make a home more comfortable and completely change the look and feel of a property.
When a tree can be cared for and maintained, that’s always worth considering. When it can’t, we make sure the work is handled safely and properly.
It’s About Doing Good Work for Good People
For me, this business isn’t just about cutting branches or removing trees. It’s about showing up, doing the job properly and treating people’s properties with respect.
Homeowners are trusting us around their houses, vehicles, fences, gardens and everything else they’ve worked hard for. I don’t take that lightly.
I love what I do because the work is honest, challenging and useful. I get to solve problems, spend my days outside and help people take care of their homes. I can look back at the end of the day and see exactly what we accomplished.
That’s a pretty good way to make a living.
